The Great Movie Ride Dinner at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Have you ever wanted to dine in an attraction at Walt Disney World?  Well, last night I got the opportunity to dine in the Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Disney offered their Tables in Wonderland cardholders a special opportunity to participate in this special after-hours dinner inside the Great Movie Ride. It was fun heading into the park when the day guests were heading out.

Disney is always great in creating a story to go with an attraction and this time we were told that we would be making a movie inside the ride.  We met our Director outside and he escorted us into the attraction. We were transported back to the glory days of the movie studios.

They had appetizers and wine in the Gangster area.  They also had several great cast members performing as gangsters strolling through the crowd.  All too soon it was time to move along to the next area for dinner.

If you are a true Disney geek like I am, you find it hard to believe that you are strolling through the attraction.  Our group remarked more than once about the attention to detail that Disney has when designing the attractions.  It was great to be able to spend more time looking at all the details that you don’t normally see when you ride the attraction.

We moved to the Western set where we would eat our dinner. The dinner was limited to 80 people. You were assigned a table that sat 10.  Our group was seated at the Jesse James table.

We were entertained by a great trio while we dined.  We had fun guessing the tunes that they were playing.

We were served an appetizer of a Creamy Free Range Yard Bird Corn Chowder with Grilled Flatbread, a salad of Wild Greens tossed with Cactus and Cilantro Vinaigrette plated tableside and topped with Carrot Tumbleweeds. The entree was Mesquite Grilled Cowboy Steak with Skillet Potatoes and Whiskey Green Beans. They also served a house made Roasted Onion Bread.

You just couldn’t stop looking around and realizing where you were dining.

They started cleaning away the plates and everyone started buzzing about the next area we would visit.  Dessert was being served in the Land of Oz. There were plenty of people with cameras posing in front of the props.  This was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

We finally made it to the Land of Oz for dessert. They had lollipops on the table as decorations.  Here the setting was a little more intimate with small tables.  They had a table of Munchkin-sized desserts,   everything from cheesecake on a stick to chocolate covered strawberries.

Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted Glinda the Good Witch making her way through the crowd.  She was very popular as everyone wanted a picture with her. Before we knew it the Bad Witch made an appearance and Glinda kept us safe. We also got to see the Munchkins perform.

The director came around to congratulate us for playing our parts perfectly.

Sadly, the evening had flown by and our dining experience was over. If you would like to hear our thoughts about the dining experience in detail, be sure to listen to the DIS Unplugged Podcast this Wednesday.  The four of us that went will be talking about the dinner.

I was there also. What a great opportunity to see one of my favorite attractions up close & personal. Food was OK – could have been more appetizers available. Desserts were tasty.

Can’t wait for future special dinners.
