Last week’s cold snap in Central Florida was hard not only for tourists visiting the theme parks, but on the animals in the area as well. On Monday, December 27th, SeaWorld Orlando received a 10 foot, 1,000 pound male manatee suffering from cold stress. The video provided by SeaWorld shows the manatee receiving a medical evaluation by SeaWorld veterinarians and animal care specialists.
Dr. Kathy Heym, Senior Veterinarian for SeaWorld, reports the manatee requires food and water via a tube twice a day in order to recover its body weight. In 2010, SeaWorld Orlando has helped to rescue and protect 26 manatees in Central Florida and has released 16 back into the wild.
