We went to a great party at Disney’s Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World the other day. The Sundowner Celebration is being held only in the month of June at this theme park.
The event starts after Mickey’s Jammin’ Jungle Parade and lasts until the park closes for the evening. It takes place in 3 separate areas of the park.
When you walk through Discovery Island, they have art focusing on nature and animals. I don’t have photos since they request that you not take any in this area. Harambe Village is where you will find most of the activities. There are visiting artists in this area so you will find some new and unique gift ideas. They also have some new food and drink items at Tamu Tamu, the Dawa Bar, and Kusafari. They have a great new fruit salad in half of a pineapple. It is pricey but it was so yummy. Be sure to allow plenty of time to enjoy the Burudika Band. They were teaching the crowd how to do a dance that is done at African weddings when we stopped to enjoy the area.
They have a Wine Walk and Fruit Juice Sampler. To me, a wine walk means you walk around an area to enjoy different wines. At Animal Kingdom it was just a wine table. You have 12 choices – 6 red and 6 white wines from South Africa were offered. You can buy 4 or 6 wine samples. You receive a wristband and a card that they stamp as you sample. The cast members encouraged us to note which ones were our favorite. My daughter enjoyed the non alcoholic juice tastings.
The Anandapur area of the park also has some unique merchandise and entertainment for this celebration. Be sure to leave room for all the great food items offered during the celebration. I loved the African inspired chex mix. They also had a special hot dog. There was a food demonstration going on as well.
Just be warned if you try to get back to this area after the parade. You will have to fight your way past all the people leaving the park. We were pleasantly surprised to see it wasn’t very busy back where the celebration was taking place. I know we will be back several more times before it ends.
